Clay Mobile

Clay Mobile is a program that happens with EW @ WWHS on Mondays and Wednesdays with Ms. Annette.

The students are learning to create different reusable items out of clay. Although slightly messy, there is a lot of work involved in creating a masterpiece such as a pot, mug, or bowl!

The students love the challenge of having to create something they can actually use, and being able to let their artistic abilities shine through. Here are some pictures of some things that students are currently working on!

Brazilian Drumming

On Wednesdays and Fridays the students participate in Brazilian Drumming with Mr. Xande.

The students are learning what it means to maintain beat, rhythm, how to create different sounds on their drums, how to hold the drum sticks, and various call and responses.

One interesting aspect of brazilian drumming and any type of percussion is the math that is involved. You have to be able to pace yourself and keep up with the beat by being attentive to the different patterns that make up whatever type of song you are learning.

Another interesting thing about brazilian drumming is that you have to LISTEN to what the leader is drumming in order to know what sound you should be making on your own drum. When it comes to call and responses (in brazilian drumming) and thinking about communication in other cultures, music is a big part of how people can be aware of what is going on in their surroundings. Perfect example of the types of things our students are learning in the brazilian drumming program!

Water Safety Day Boys and Girls Club Saturday 5/12/12

EW at WWHS participated in Water Safety Day at the East Camden Boys and Girls Club on Saturday May 12, 2012.

Students had the opportunity to get free swim lessons, learn about scuba diving, do cross training/rowing exercises, hear a presentation from the Coast Guard, and learn about life guarding.

Mayor Nutter from Philadelphia and Mayor Redd from Camden were in attendance as well as the Camden RiverShark! This was definitely a fun, active day!

Philadelphia Zoo Trip 4/28/12

Students from the EW program at WWHS had the opportunity to go to the Philadelphia ZOO Saturday April 28, 2012.

This was a very fun trip with lots to see!

Camden Caribana

Camden Caribana is a new project for trimester 3.

This project centers around activities and research about different countries and cultures (African, Latino, etc) in reference to the Caribana Celebration that happens every year in Toronto, Canada and a variety of other places across the globe.

Some of the places that the students are researching are:

Trinidad, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Colombia, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Grenada, Cayman Islands, and Africa.

The students are looking up very specific information in regards to the traditions of the above places, as well as the type of music, dance, arts, and food that that respective place is known for.

Arts and crafts activities for Camden Caribana include making face masks, head dresses, costumes, and a variety of other projects. Students are also learning African Dance as part of the dance sessions that happen on Mondays and Fridays and Brazilian Drumming which happens on Wednesdays and Fridays.

The culminating event for this project will be Friday June 1st. The students will present trifolds and poster boards of the many places they researched and have activity tables as well as a cook out. We are looking forward to this event!

Face Painting @ Creme Elementary School

Two of our stellar EW students at WWHS Tiara Miller and Travis Daniels as well as Americorps member Chaliyah Valentine volunteered their time at Creme Elementary School in Camden for that school's first ever Family Night.

Face Painting is a popular activity that we offer at a variety of EW Camden events, and this event was no different! Parents and their children patiently waited in line to get some of the best animations our EW crew could muster up!

Kaleidoscopes for Hope

Kaleidoscopes for Hope is a kaleidoscope art project with Ms. Trish on Mondays and Wednesdays. The students in this program are building kaleidoscopes from scratch with glass, mirrors, and piping/tubing.

Once they have set the foundation for the kaleidoscope they then hot glue the tubing with the mirrors inside to a petri dish filled with a variety of beads to create the effect. After the kaleidoscope is created, it is decorated on the outside with an assortment of stones and bamboo.

Once the students are finished creating the kaleidoscopes with Ms. Trish they will be given to cancer patients as a token of inspiration. On the outside of the kaleidoscope holders are inspirational quotes and words about peace, love, motivation, and holding on to hope. Our students are not only learning the skill of crafting kaleidoscopes but are also learning what it means to give hope, and how they can impact others in a positive way.

IllStyle & Peace Productions Hip Hop Dance Team

EW @ WWHS is very lucky to have a new dance team from Philadelphia/New York to work with our students. IllStyle and Peace Productions Dance Team works with our students on Mondays and Fridays.

On April 19, 2012 IllStyle came to WWHS to put on a lunchroom assembly to showcase some of their skills and help recruit students for the hip hop dance program. We are very excited to see what the students will learn from working with them!

EW WWHS in support of Trayvon Martin

The students at WWHS EducationWorks decided to do a written project on their thoughts and emotions in regards to the incident involving Trayvon Martin. After they finished the writing assignment a group discussion took place where students were allowed to vent how this incident affected them on a local level.

After the discussion, students took some notes, and a poster was created that hangs outside the EW office door at WWHS to display some of the things the students had to say. Shout Out to all of the EW students who participated in this activity!!!!!
